In this talk we'll debunk some myths about WebAssembly and explore what it is and what it isn't, its challenges, look at how we can use it practically in applications today, and what the future holds, both in the browser and beyond!

There's not much room for debate - securing Kubernetes is a challenge. Whether it's the insecure defaults or the multiple layers of abstraction, teams often struggle to define proper threat models and secure their clusters. In this talk, we'll cover kubernetes security basics from the viewpoints of cluster administrator and application developer. After some brief background and slides, we'll jump into live demos where Casey will assume the role of application developer, trying to secure his applications on Kubernetes, and Seth will assume the role of cluster administrator trying to secure the underlying cluster resources. After this talk, attendees will have a checklist of ways to improve the security posture of their Kubernetes applications and clusters.

Serverless Data Streaming at Scale

Everything fails, all the time. This is what Dr. Vogels, the CTO of Amazon likes to say. This is what we have learned over and over again while implementing serverless data streaming at scale. In this talk, I will be using a real-life example of Finland's national public broadcasting company, Yle, to talk about AWS Kinesis Data Streams, Kinesis Data Firehose, Kinesis Analytics and how they integrate with AWS Lambda. I will be talking about some of the “gotchas” that came along the way and lessons we learned while implementing a fully managed serverless architecture streaming over 0.5 TB of user interaction data per day and enabling diverse, near real-time content personalization.

The Cloud Native lifestyle has been around for well more than a decade (depending on how you mark its birth) to create this worldwide ecosystem of open-source driven, continuous development and deployment. The expansion of the developer ecosystem, the application ecosystem, and public cloud usage is massive, creating from large companies three of the four companies in the world with a market capitalization greater than $1 Trillion. And it's only going to become a bigger movement. At the core of this approach to building and maintaining applications are containers and Kubernetes, which are finally living up to some of their potential -- but only some. Let's talk about the current state of cloud native practices with containers, ways in which the experience remains broken and why, and how different solutions might lead the way forward.
